With the shift to value-based care, new payment models now reward organizations that focus on improving quality and lowering costs and penalize those that do not. Because of this, health systems are looking for innovative ways to relieve doctors of their administrative jams and make all parties across the organization more productive. These efforts require a top to bottom initiative, with the organization taking steps to successfully transition to value-based care.
In this week’s blog, we share how one health system, Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC), part of Barnabas Health, a regional referral and teaching hospital, is driving transparency, communication, results and excellence across their organization by leveraging a Performance Management (PM) solution to ensure they are properly tracking and marching toward their organizational goals.
With a strategic focus on streamlining processes to exceed patient expectations, provide great care and include patients, physicians and employees in important decision-making, JCMC implemented the PM solution as a guide to track progress and fuel decision making in near real-time. The solution allows them to measure and track data and hold employees accountable for doing their part in maintaining the hospital’s four pillars of excellence around patient safety, clinical quality, engagement of patients, employees, physicians and community and economic health. For example, every month, department heads meet with the president and CEO to review their progress toward the company’s pillars. Before each meeting, they sign into the PM solution system to obtain a dashboard view of the operational plan. If there are items marked red, those responsible will be called on to explain their strategy for rectifying their lagging metrics.
JCMC’s progress with their four pillars of excellence and tracking their success through PM enabled them to receive the Baldrige Vision of Performance Excellence Award. The award is the highest quality achievement presented at the state level and every employee in the organization now employs the rigorous Malcom Baldrige criteria to achieve organizational excellence.
As the industry shifts towards value, organizations will continue to struggle to meet their quality metrics and succeed with quality care.
