Ardent Health Services Uses ICD-10 Code Benchmarking to Improve Training and Claims Specificity

The anticipation for the ICD-10 mandate created stress throughout the healthcare industry as it prepared to learn how to maximize revenue with thousands of new codes. Tackling ICD-10 is a constant educational process – one that needs to be fueled with data to ensure proper clinical documentation improvement (CDI).

Ardent Health Services, which has three health systems and 14 hospitals in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, recently shared their experience on how they leverage analytics to execute on their CDI strategies.   One key challenge that they discussed was the lack of focus when addressing large amounts of data. Ardent Health Services needed to pinpoint educational opportunities for both coders and CDI teams and monitor the progress of documentation efforts, specifically with diagnosis-related groups (DRGs)

With MedeAnalytics Revenue Integrity Ardent is able to identify documentation trends, especially around specific diagnoses to help them narrow their focus. The major takeaway was the ability to provide real-time feedback from their health integration integrity (HII) team. The team supplements the CDI team by conducting chart reviews after coding but prior to final billing.  Lastly, the solution offers monthly detailed reports on DRGs that are presented to leadership teams to benchmark and track progress.

Through the use of code benchmarking and education, healthcare organizations can continue to succeed with ICD-10. To learn more about Ardent Health Services success, listen to the webinar here.
