The story behind the numbers...

The Challenge

Nebraska Methodist Health System partnered with MedeAnalytics to maximize the value of its patient accounting system (Cerner). Specifically, the hospital system sought to address:

  • Increasing A/R days
  • Lack of access into claim-level detail
  • Insufficient visibility into staff productivity
  • Rising denial rates

In tackling these challenges, organization leadership hoped to improve cost to collect, operationalize self-service analyses, and facilitate access to and actionability of data.

  • 39 clinic locations
  • Nursing and allied health college
  • Medical supply distributorship and central laundry

The Solution

Nebraska Methodist utilized MedeAnalytics’ Business Office Suite to gain the self-service analytics and real-time insights necessary to increase efficiency and uncover improvement opportunities in the revenue cycle. Business Office enables end users and analysts to:

Standardize and automate reports that used to take weeks to collect and deliver, reducing month-end close cycle time by 5 days

Monitor productivity levels of A/R staff and quickly resolve any issues

Drill down into transactions and trends in more depth than Cerner allows

Track and examine root causes of denials in order to transform processes and avoid future denials

In one case, an analyst adeptly used Business Office to determine and correct mis-postings of reason codes. The result was $180K in underpayment opportunities that were billed to the patients.

“[Having] additional analytics has been invaluable. Paired with our patient accounting system, it allows our entire revenue cycle team to get the immediate insights and data we need to make significant improvements.”
