Self-insured health system uses big data insights to identify clinical priorities for employees, improving employee care and benefits plan design

Emeryville, Calif. – (March 17, 2015)MedeAnalytics, a pioneer in healthcare analytics, today announced Covenant Health, a not-for-profit healthcare system based in New England, has deployed MedeAnalytics’ Population Health solution to improve health and wellness for its 7,000 employees and beneficiaries. Covenant leveraged the solution to gain insights into which employee patient groups were at high risk for serious conditions, and was able to redesign their health plan to focus on the ailments that employees suffered most frequently. The evidence-based insights uncovered by MedeAnalytics will enable Covenant to save a projected 1.8 million dollars in 2015.

“MedeAnalytics’ Population Health solution allowed us to do two things: design a plan that met our employee’s needs by aggregating and analyzing past trends, and create healthcare plans that catered to the entire network’s needs,” said Richard Boehler, MD and CEO of St. Joseph Hospital, one of three hospitals within Covenant Health. “We see this as an important stepping stone towards our goal of having at least 50 percent of our payments – including those with commercial health plans and third party administrators – be tied to value-based models by 2018.”

As part of its efforts to build competencies for the transition to value-based care and to address surging healthcare costs, Covenant established a centralized claims data warehouse using MedeAnalytics’ Population Health solution. Based on data collected throughout 2014, Covenant was able to optimize employee care and disease management and establish wellness programs to reduce overall costs for the entire health system. The new initiative also created a foundation for managing broader sets of data from multiple payers, third party administrators and patient populations in the future.

“Improving the quality of care and reducing expenses will continue to be a top priority for the entire healthcare industry, but providers have a unique opportunity to drive change, especially within their own organization,” said Andrew Hurd, MedeAnalytics Chairman and CEO. “Covenant has seen a powerful transformation in their data-driven approach towards employee population health. Self-insured organizations can look to Covenant’s success as a model for a scalable plan towards broader population health initiatives.”

MedeAnalytics’ Population Health solution aggregates and normalizes disparate claims, digital records, cost, patient satisfaction and other clinical and financial data. It offers insight into clinical quality, utilization and costs associated with patient populations and integrates closely with a broad array of health information exchange (HIE) and provider-facing clinical workflow partners to provide a comprehensive population health management platform.

At the upcoming HIMSS15 Annual Conference & Exhibition, Covenant will host an educational session on its employee population health program. It will take place on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 from 2:30-3:00 p.m. CST at the Clinical & Business Intelligence Knowledge Center (Booth 5484). Dr. Boehler and Rebecca Williams, St. Joseph Healthcare Care Coordinator Manager, will share best practices on building a population health management program and unique ways to leverage data insights to potentially save millions of dollars. Dr. Boehler and Williams will also outline how they fostered a positive cultural shift among care coordinators and employees to be more proactive and responsible with their healthcare utilization.
